Please

  • Keep your hat on when entering a ger, if you are wearing one, but lift it as a sign of greeting
  • Pass and accept things with right hand and palms upor both hands and ensure that your sleeves are rolled down
  • Remove your gloves when shaking hands, if you are wearing them
  • Walk round inside the ger in a clockwise direction
  • Receive and food, a gift or anything similar from a Mongolian with both hands or with the right hand supported at the wrist or elbow
  • Take at least a sip or nibble of the delicacies offered
  • Leave a small gift, other than money, for your hosts
  • Cover your head & wrists when presenting gifts/money
  • Try to speak Mongolian if you can
  • Address elders/authorities with “Ta” not “Che”
  • Indicate object/direction with open palm facing up
  • Try to sing when asked (ability doesn’t matter!)
  • Flick alcohol in traditional manner when appropriate
  • Shake the hands of someone who you have accidentally bumped feet with

Please don’t

  • Please do not post or fence come between you if you are walking with Mongolians
  • Please do not Whistle inside a ger or house
  • Please do not point your feet in the direction of the altar (which will be in the north side) when sitting in a ger
  • Please do not Let people walk over your outstretched legs
  • Please do not Tread on the threshold of the ger when you walk over it
  • Lean against a support column furniture or wall of the ger
  • Stamp out a fire or put water or any rubbish on it; fire is sacred
  • Walk in front of an older person
  • Turn your back to the altar and religious objects at the back of the ger
  • Have long conversations in your own language in front of hosts who don't understand it
  • Point a knife in the direction of anyone
  • Pass anything to a Mongolian with just two fingers
  • Take food from a plate with your left hand
  • Pass or accept anything with left hand
  • Point with your finger
  • Talk or joke about bad things that may happen
  • Point your feet at someone or show your soles
  • Touch a man’s upper body without permission
  • Whistle inside
  • Enter a vehicle from its left side
  • Let blood touch the ground
  • Wash dirty dishes/ clothes directly in a body of water
  • Write on someone’s business card in their presence
  • Say thank you too much or for small gestures
  • Don’t litter. Please help us keep the environment clean.
